DECKING

DECKING

Constructing a deck is the perfect solution for a sloping or uneven block. Hardwood timbers such as Merbau and Spotted Gum are an excellent choice of decking material. Their grain and natural earthy hues make them a more attractive option than softwoods such as treated pine. Hardwood decking (although initially more expensive than softwood) is highly durable, naturally resilient to rotting and with a coat of oil, will continue to look great for many years to come.

Our team of deck builders at Shape and Form, have constructed a large and varied array of timber decks. We are more than happy to work closely with you to construct the right deck which will tick all of your boxes.

Our plentiful knowledge of local council requirements, including staircase and hand railing height requirements, makes for a smooth process of bringing your vision to life.

MERBAU DECKING

MERBAU DECKING

Merbau is the most commonly used timber for deck construction. Especially with our frosty Winter mornings and dry Summer days, here in Melbourne.

Also known as ‘Kwila’ this durable hardwood is an introduced species from Asia and is today grown in Northern Queensland. Its' colours vary from yellow-orange to a deep brown hue. Naturally resistant to termites, Merbau is also used for making things such as musical instruments, boats, cabinets, tool handles and furniture.

Merbau is a great choice for decking, and because our deck builders only use certified Merbau, you will have peace of mind knowing that the Merbau used for your deck, is from a well managed sustainable forest.

SPOTTED GUM DECKING

SPOTTED GUM DECKING

Spotted Gum is the next most common timber which decks are built from, behind Merbau.

The main benefit of spotted gum decking, is that it doesn’t bleed tannins, like Merbau can at times (resulting in stained paving areas). The colour range in spotted gum’s grain is also larger and more varied, than the options of which you can gain from Merbau.
